Perched on the Prenestini Mountains but fairly close to the valley, the city of Palestrina is dominated by the beautiful building that is now the archaeological museum. But if you look at it more closely, you can see the splendid terraced structure that characterised it from the earliest times and made it
a place where everyone wanted to go to know their future. Those structures were the temple dedicated to the goddess Fortuna Primigenia.
The atriums that look out on the city’s main piazza feature splendid mosaics. One of them has been moved to the museum: the Nilotic mosaic, with animals, plants and human activities. They are all represented – just like in a story – by precious pieces that have been skilfully placed. In the halls and exhibits of the museum there are small jewels of sculpture and the art of goldsmithing. A must-see.
