PALIANO
The stronghold of the Colonna family
Paliano is overlooked by the might of the Rocca or Fortress, an ancient ducal castle that is now used as a maximum security prison. It has always been a stronghold of the Colonna family, who embellished the city with monuments that can still be admired today. The Collegiata di S. Andrea (Collegiate Church of St. Andrew) is definitely worth a visit. The family tomb was built inside the church. There is a Chapel with the image of the Virgin of Zancati, who performed many miracles. On the High Altar there is a large canvas by Conca, depicting the Crucifixion of St. Andrew. The Colonna family restored the walls and the fortress. They built the sumptuous baronial palace in the 17th century. It is a lavish residence of the princes. It is rich in works of art with canvases by the School of Caravaggio.
