PIGLIO
Stories of wine and wineries
Piglio is at the centre of a series of medieval villages built on the slopes of Mount Scalambra overlooking the Sacco valley that stretches below, where you can admire the scenery that is populated by vineyards and olive groves. The village is divided into a series of narrow streets that lead to the highest point where the castle towers atop all the dwellings, bordered by the ancient gates to the village. The centre retains its herringbone structure, and the dwellings built on the steeply sloping hillside were used for defence, in the absence of surrounding city walls. The olive growing and wine making tradition, particularly with the production of DOCG Cesanese del Piglio wine, are the calling cards of the area.
